What are triglycerides?
Triglycerides are the most common type of fat in your blood. They are how your body stores and transports energy from the food you eat, moving between the gut, liver and fat tissue. A modest level is completely normal; the question is how much is circulating, particularly after fasting.
Why they matter
Triglycerides are a useful window on metabolic health. They respond closely to diet, alcohol, body weight and insulin sensitivity, so they often move early when metabolism is under strain. Raised triglycerides are associated with higher cardiovascular and metabolic risk, and very high levels can also affect the pancreas.
What your results can mean
Higher than optimal
Elevated triglycerides often reflect excess refined carbohydrate or alcohol intake, insulin resistance or excess weight. They tend to respond well to lifestyle change, which is part of what makes them a rewarding marker to track.
Within the healthy range
A healthy fasting triglyceride level suggests your body is handling dietary fats and energy storage well, and generally sits alongside a more favourable overall lipid and metabolic profile.
Reference ranges in Australia
Australian laboratories report triglycerides in millimoles per litre (mmol/L), usually from a fasting sample. As a general guide, a fasting value below about 1.7 mmol/L is often considered favourable. These figures are indicative only, so read your result against the range on your own report.
