What is fasting glucose?
Fasting glucose is the amount of sugar in your blood after an overnight fast, usually eight or more hours without food. Because it is measured when you have not eaten, it reflects your baseline blood sugar rather than the temporary rise that follows a meal, making it a clean snapshot of how well your body keeps glucose in check at rest.
Why it matters
Glucose is your body's main fuel, and keeping it in a narrow range is one of the clearest signs that your metabolism is working well. Fasting glucose is a long-standing marker of metabolic health and is one of the values a clinician uses, alongside others, when assessing insulin resistance and blood-sugar regulation over time.
What your results can mean
Higher than optimal
A raised fasting glucose can reflect insulin resistance, where the body is working harder to manage blood sugar. It is interpreted by your clinician alongside HbA1c and insulin, and is often responsive to changes in diet, activity and body composition when caught early.
Within the healthy range
A fasting glucose in range suggests your body is regulating blood sugar well at baseline, which is a good sign of underlying metabolic health.
Reference ranges in Australia
Fasting glucose is reported in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). As a general guide, a fasting value below about 5.5 mmol/L is often considered within the healthy range, with higher values warranting clinical review. Read your result against the range on your own report.
