What is TIBC?
TIBC, or total iron-binding capacity, measures how much iron your blood could carry if all the transport proteins were full. It is closely related to transferrin and gives another way of expressing your body's iron-carrying capacity.
Why it matters
TIBC helps complete the iron studies. When iron is scarce, the body increases its carrying capacity, so a high TIBC often accompanies iron deficiency. Read with serum iron, it feeds into the same saturation picture that guides interpretation.
What your results can mean
Higher than optimal
A high TIBC commonly reflects iron deficiency, as the body expands its capacity to capture iron. It is interpreted alongside ferritin and saturation.
Lower than optimal
A low TIBC can occur with inflammation, poor nutrition or iron overload, and is read within the full iron picture.
Reference ranges in Australia
TIBC is reported in micromoles per litre (µmol/L), with laboratory-specific reference ranges. Read your result against your own report and alongside the rest of your iron studies.
