Calcium

Calcium

Educational information only. At Precursor, blood testing is requested and reviewed by a clinician and considered alongside your history and other markers, not as a stand-alone diagnosis. Testing is performed in NATA-accredited laboratories to ISO 15189 standards.

What is calcium?

Calcium is the most abundant mineral in your body, essential for bones and teeth, but also for muscle contraction, nerve signals and blood clotting. The blood level is kept within a tight range by hormones, so blood calcium reflects regulation rather than simply how much calcium you eat.

Why it matters

Because calcium is so tightly controlled, a value outside the range is a meaningful signal that prompts a clinician to look at the hormones and organs that regulate it, particularly the parathyroid glands, vitamin D and the kidneys.

What your results can mean

Higher than optimal

A high calcium can relate to parathyroid activity, vitamin D or other processes, and because the body regulates it so carefully, it is always followed up by a clinician.

Lower than optimal

A low calcium can relate to vitamin D, parathyroid or kidney factors, and is likewise interpreted alongside those markers.

Reference ranges in Australia

Calcium is reported in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). As a general guide, a value in the region of 2.10 to 2.60 mmol/L is often considered within range. Because it is affected by albumin, laboratories often report a corrected calcium too. Read your result against your own report.

Test your bone and mineral health with Precursor

Calcium is best read alongside vitamin D, phosphate and PTH. At Precursor it is measured as part of Full Advanced Bloods, a single clinician-reviewed blood draw covering your bone, vitamins, kidney and other markers together, giving you and your clinician a broad baseline to understand and track.
