What is globulin?
Globulins are a broad family of blood proteins that includes antibodies, transport proteins and enzymes. The globulin value is usually calculated by subtracting albumin from total protein. Because antibodies are part of this group, globulins offer a window onto the immune system as well as the liver.
Why it matters
Globulin is most useful in relation to albumin. The ratio between the two, and the direction each moves, helps a clinician distinguish between liver issues, inflammation, immune activity and other causes, turning two simple numbers into a more informative picture.
What your results can mean
Higher than optimal
A raised globulin can accompany inflammation, infection or increased immune activity. It prompts a clinician to look at the wider clinical picture and, where needed, more specific tests.
Lower than optimal
A low globulin is less common and can relate to immune or protein-loss issues. As always, it is read in context rather than alone.

Globulin is reported in grams per litre (g/L) and is typically a calculated value, with laboratory-specific reference ranges. Read your result against the range on your own report and alongside your albumin.
