What is ApoB?
Apolipoprotein B, or ApoB, is a protein found on the surface of every cholesterol-carrying particle that can lodge in artery walls, including LDL, VLDL and lipoprotein(a). Because each of these particles carries exactly one ApoB, measuring it effectively counts the number of atherogenic particles in your blood.
Why it matters
Standard cholesterol tests measure the amount of cholesterol inside particles, not how many particles there are. ApoB measures the particle count directly, which many consider the most accurate single marker of lipid-related cardiovascular risk. It can reveal hidden risk in people whose LDL looks acceptable but who carry many small, cholesterol-poor particles.
What your results can mean
Higher than optimal
A high ApoB signals a large number of particles able to drive plaque, even when LDL appears in range. It is increasingly used to fine-tune risk and to guide how aggressively lipids should be managed.
Within the optimal range
A lower ApoB reflects fewer atherogenic particles overall, which is favourable for long-term arterial health. As with other lipids, the ideal target depends on your personal cardiovascular risk.
Reference ranges in Australia
ApoB is reported in grams per litre (g/L). As a general guide, values below roughly 0.8 to 0.9 g/L are often considered favourable, with lower targets for those at higher cardiovascular risk. Read your result against the range on your own report and in the context of your overall risk.
