Eosinophils

Educational information only. At Precursor, blood testing is requested and reviewed by a clinician and considered alongside your history and other markers, not as a stand-alone diagnosis. Testing is performed in NATA-accredited laboratories to ISO 15189 standards.

What are eosinophils?

Eosinophils are a less common type of white blood cell with two main specialities: responding to allergic reactions and defending against parasites. They are a small but informative part of the white cell differential.

Why they matter

Because eosinophils are so closely tied to allergy and parasitic responses, a change in their number can point in fairly specific directions. This makes them a useful marker when allergic conditions such as asthma, eczema or hay fever are part of the picture.

What your results can mean

Higher than optimal

A raised eosinophil count often accompanies allergic conditions and certain other processes. It is interpreted alongside your symptoms and the rest of the differential.

Within the healthy range

Eosinophils in range are typical and simply form part of a normal white cell picture.

Reference ranges in Australia

Eosinophils are reported in cells times ten to the ninth per litre (x10⁹/L), with laboratory-specific reference ranges. Read your result against the range on your own report and alongside the rest of your differential.

Test your blood count with Precursor

Eosinophils are most meaningful within the full differential. At Precursor they are measured as part of Full Advanced Bloods, a single clinician-reviewed blood draw covering your full blood count, heart, metabolic, hormonal, kidney, liver, thyroid and nutrient markers together, giving you and your clinician a broad baseline to understand and track.
