What is eGFR?
eGFR stands for estimated glomerular filtration rate. It is a calculation, based mainly on your creatinine along with age and sex, that estimates how many millilitres of blood your kidneys filter each minute. In effect, it translates a raw creatinine into a more intuitive measure of kidney performance.
Why it matters
eGFR is the number clinicians most often use to summarise kidney function and to track it over time. Because it accounts for age and sex, it gives a more standardised read than creatinine alone, and it is central to detecting and monitoring reduced kidney function.
What your results can mean
Lower than optimal
A lower eGFR suggests the kidneys are filtering less efficiently. A single low value can be influenced by hydration and other factors, so it is confirmed over time rather than read from one result.
Within the healthy range
A higher eGFR generally reflects well-functioning kidneys. Note that eGFR is often capped at a top value on lab reports rather than reported as an exact high number.
Reference ranges in Australia
eGFR is reported in millilitres per minute per 1.73 square metres (mL/min/1.73m²). As a general guide, a value of 90 or above is often considered normal, with sustained lower values warranting clinical review. Read your result against your own report and in context.
