Educational information only. At Precursor, blood testing is requested and reviewed by a clinician and considered alongside your history and other markers, not as a stand-alone diagnosis. Testing is performed in NATA-accredited laboratories to ISO 15189 standards.

What is hs-CRP?

hs-CRP, or high-sensitivity C-reactive protein, measures a protein the liver produces in response to inflammation. The high-sensitivity version can detect the low levels relevant to long-term cardiovascular and metabolic health, not just the large rises seen with infection.

Why it matters

hs-CRP is a widely used marker of low-grade, background inflammation, which is increasingly recognised as a contributor to cardiovascular and metabolic risk. It adds a dimension that cholesterol and glucose do not, helping build a fuller picture of long-term health.

What your results can mean

Higher than optimal

A raised hs-CRP indicates inflammation. A large rise usually reflects a recent infection or injury and is temporary, while a persistently mild elevation is the finding of interest for long-term risk. Because a recent illness can skew it, timing matters.

Within the optimal range

A low hs-CRP suggests little background inflammation, which is favourable in the context of cardiovascular and metabolic health.

Reference ranges in Australia

hs-CRP is reported in milligrams per litre (mg/L). Lower values are generally more favourable for long-term risk, but because a recent infection can raise it substantially, it is best interpreted when you are well. Read your result against your own report and with a clinician.

Understanding your inflammation with Precursor

hs-CRP is best read alongside your heart and metabolic markers, and away from recent illness. At Precursor, this testing is requested and reviewed by a clinician, so your result is read in context. If this is something you would like to understand, you can speak with Precursor's clinical team about whether testing is right for you.
