What is HDL cholesterol?
HDL stands for high-density lipoprotein, the particle often described as 'good' cholesterol. Its main job is reverse transport: it helps collect excess cholesterol from tissues and artery walls and carry it back to the liver to be cleared. Because of this protective role, higher HDL has traditionally been read as favourable for heart health.
Why it matters
HDL is one of the standard lipids used to build a cardiovascular risk picture. Low HDL is associated with higher heart risk and often travels alongside metabolic issues such as insulin resistance, raised triglycerides and central weight gain. It is most useful read as part of the whole lipid panel rather than chased as a number in its own right.
What your results can mean
Lower than optimal
Low HDL is linked to a less favourable cardiovascular profile and frequently signals underlying metabolic strain. It often improves with regular activity, reducing excess weight, stopping smoking and other lifestyle changes.
Within the healthy range
A healthy HDL suggests your reverse cholesterol transport is working well. Importantly, higher is not endlessly better: very high HDL does not add protection in the way once assumed, so it is interpreted in context rather than maximised.
Reference ranges in Australia
Australian laboratories report HDL cholesterol in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). As a general guide, values above roughly 1.0 mmol/L in men and 1.3 mmol/L in women are often considered favourable, though ranges vary by laboratory. Read your result against the range on your own report and interpret it alongside your other lipids.
