What is Lipoprotein(a)?

Lipoprotein(a), often written Lp(a), is an LDL-like particle with an extra protein attached. What makes it distinctive is that your level is largely set by your genes and stays relatively stable through life, changing little with diet or lifestyle. Many people with a raised level have no idea, because it is not part of a standard cholesterol test.

Why it matters

A high Lp(a) is an independent, inherited risk factor for cardiovascular disease and for narrowing of the aortic valve. Because it is genetic, a single measurement usually tells you your lifelong tendency, which is why it is often described as a once-in-a-lifetime test unless something changes clinically.

What your results can mean

Higher than optimal

A raised Lp(a) adds to your overall cardiovascular risk on top of your other lipids. It cannot be lowered much by lifestyle, so it is used to inform how closely your other, modifiable risk factors should be managed.

Within the healthy range

A lower Lp(a) means this particular inherited risk factor is not adding to your cardiovascular risk, which is reassuring context alongside the rest of your lipid panel.

Reference ranges in Australia

Lp(a) is reported either in nanomoles per litre (nmol/L) or milligrams per litre, depending on the assay. As a general guide, values below about 75 nmol/L are often considered lower risk. Because units and assays differ, always read your result against the range and units on your own report.
