Transferrin Saturation

Transferrin Saturation

Educational information only. At Precursor, blood testing is requested and reviewed by a clinician and considered alongside your history and other markers, not as a stand-alone diagnosis. Testing is performed in NATA-accredited laboratories to ISO 15189 standards.

What is transferrin saturation?

Transferrin saturation is the percentage of your iron-transport protein that is actually carrying iron. It is calculated from serum iron and transferrin, and in effect it tells you how full your iron-transport trucks are, from empty to fully loaded.

Why it matters

Transferrin saturation is one of the more informative iron markers because it captures the balance between iron supply and transport capacity in a single figure. It is particularly useful for detecting both iron deficiency and iron overload, complementing ferritin.

What your results can mean

Lower than optimal

A low saturation suggests limited iron relative to transport capacity, consistent with iron deficiency. It is read alongside ferritin to confirm.

Higher than optimal

A high saturation can be an early sign of iron overload, including inherited conditions such as haemochromatosis, and prompts a clinician to look further.

Reference ranges in Australia

Transferrin saturation is reported as a percentage (%), with laboratory-specific reference ranges. Read your result against your own report and alongside ferritin and the rest of your iron studies.

Test your iron with Precursor

Transferrin saturation is most meaningful within the full iron studies. At Precursor it is measured as part of Full Advanced Bloods, a single clinician-reviewed blood draw covering your iron, full blood count and other markers together, giving you and your clinician a broad baseline to understand and track.
