What is LDL cholesterol?
LDL stands for low-density lipoprotein, one of the particles that carries cholesterol around your body in the blood. It is often called 'bad' cholesterol, though that is a simplification. LDL is a normal and necessary part of how your body moves fats and builds cells. The issue is quantity: when there is too much LDL in circulation, it can move into artery walls and contribute to the build-up of plaque.
Why it matters for your arteries
Of all the standard cholesterol measures, LDL has the most direct and well-established link to cardiovascular disease. The cholesterol carried by LDL particles is the raw material that accumulates in artery walls over years, gradually narrowing and stiffening the vessels. Lowering LDL is one of the most consistently evidence-backed ways to reduce the long-term risk of heart attack and stroke, which is why it is a central number in almost every cardiovascular risk assessment.

Higher than optimal
A higher LDL is associated with a greater burden of cholesterol able to enter artery walls, and over time with a higher chance of plaque and cardiovascular events. What counts as 'too high' is not a single universal cut-off. It depends on your overall risk, so the same number can be acceptable in one person and a priority to lower in another.
Within the optimal range
A lower LDL generally reflects less cholesterol available to drive plaque, which is favourable for long-term heart health. For people at higher cardiovascular risk, clinicians often aim for LDL values lower than the general population target, because the benefit of lowering it is greater the higher the underlying risk.
Reading it in context
LDL is most informative when read alongside your other lipids and risk markers, particularly ApoB, non-HDL cholesterol, triglycerides and HDL. Two people with the same LDL can carry quite different risk once these are taken into account, which is why a full lipid picture beats any single value.
Reference ranges in Australia
Australian laboratories report LDL cholesterol in millimoles per litre (mmol/L). As a general guide, an LDL below about 2.0 mmol/L is often considered favourable for people at low to moderate risk, while those at higher cardiovascular risk are frequently guided toward lower targets again. These figures are indicative only.
