Transferrin

Educational information only. At Precursor, blood testing is requested and reviewed by a clinician and considered alongside your history and other markers, not as a stand-alone diagnosis. Testing is performed in NATA-accredited laboratories to ISO 15189 standards.

What is transferrin?

Transferrin is the protein that carries iron around your bloodstream, delivering it from storage and absorption to where it is needed. Its level reflects how hard your body is working to transport iron, and it tends to rise when iron is scarce, as the body tries to capture more of it.

Why it matters

Transferrin adds an important angle to the iron studies. Because it typically increases in iron deficiency and can fall in other states, it helps a clinician interpret whether a low iron reflects genuine deficiency or something else, and it underpins the transferrin saturation calculation.

What your results can mean

Higher than optimal

A raised transferrin often accompanies iron deficiency, as the body ramps up its iron-transport capacity. It is read alongside ferritin and saturation.

Lower than optimal

A low transferrin can occur with inflammation, poor nutrition or iron overload, and is interpreted within the full iron picture.

Reference ranges in Australia

Transferrin is reported in grams per litre (g/L), with laboratory-specific reference ranges. Read your result against your own report and alongside the rest of your iron studies.

Test your iron with Precursor

Transferrin is most meaningful within the full iron studies. At Precursor it is measured as part of Full Advanced Bloods, a single clinician-reviewed blood draw covering your iron, full blood count and other markers together, giving you and your clinician a broad baseline to understand and track.
