What is phosphate?
Phosphate is a mineral that partners with calcium to build bone, and it is also central to energy storage in your cells and to many other processes. Like calcium, its blood level is regulated by hormones and the kidneys, keeping it within a fairly narrow band.
Why it matters
Phosphate is most informative read alongside calcium and the hormones that control both. Together they help a clinician assess bone and mineral balance and give insight into kidney and parathyroid function.
What your results can mean
Higher than optimal
A high phosphate can relate to kidney function or hormonal factors, and is interpreted alongside calcium and PTH.
Lower than optimal
A low phosphate can relate to nutrition, certain hormones or other processes, and is likewise read within the mineral picture.
