What is HbA1c?
HbA1c, or glycated haemoglobin, measures the proportion of your haemoglobin that has glucose attached to it. Because red blood cells live for around three months, HbA1c reflects your average blood sugar over roughly the preceding eight to twelve weeks, rather than a single moment. It is the closest thing to a running average of your glucose control.
Why it matters
Unlike a fasting glucose, which can be swayed by a single day, HbA1c smooths out the day-to-day noise and gives a stable view of longer-term blood-sugar regulation. It needs no fasting, which makes it convenient, and it is one of the core markers a clinician uses when assessing metabolic health.
What your results can mean
Higher than optimal
A rising HbA1c suggests average blood sugar has been trending upward, often an early sign of insulin resistance. Because it reflects months rather than moments, it is a useful marker to track as lifestyle changes take effect.
Within the healthy range
An HbA1c in the healthy range indicates good average blood-sugar control over recent months, a reassuring sign of metabolic health.
Reference ranges in Australia
HbA1c is reported both as a percentage (%) and in millimoles per mole (mmol/mol). As a general guide, a value below about 5.7% (39 mmol/mol) is often considered within the healthy range, with higher values warranting clinical review. Read your result against the range on your own report.
